My dog keeps jumping on my bed?

If you don't want your pet on your furniture, never let him on any couch or bed in the first place, no matter how small and cute he is. Little puppies turn into big dogs. Provide your dog with a place of his own, like a bed or blanket, especially on hard or cold floors. Dogs like to be comfortable too! You can reward good behavior - staying on his bed, not yours - with positive reinforcement like "good doggy!" or small treat. Whenever your dog gets on the furniture, IMMEDIATELY tell the dog "no!" loudly and firmly, and push him off. Dogs respond to positive reinforcement, and hate being told no. Most dogs will realize this is bad behavior and avoid it. Don't leave your dog unattended around furniture he's not allowed on. Being able to jump up and down freely will only make training harder. Designate a special room for him when he will be left alone, or kennel train your pup. Dogs love attention, and may jump on furniture just to get attention (even if it is negative). Be sure he has adequate play time with you and gets enough walks. If your dog continues to jump on furniture, get a spray bottle. Most dogs love water but hate being sprayed (think about bath time). A quick "no!" followed by being sprayed with water - never directly in the eyes or face - will allow you to punish the dog even from across the room. Some dogs learn quicker than others, so your results may not be immediate with every dog. If you have more than one dog, it may also be harder to train one to stay off the furniture if the other is allowed. Dogs recognize inconsistent behavior. If you don't want the dog on your furniture, never allow him up. Consistency is key.
