Why do high school counselors, teachers, parents lie about how a college deg. will make you successful in life?

I just earned a bachelors degree in business and I was told in high school the higher the degree I obtain I will make a million dollars more in a lifetime than someone without one. Well guess what counselors. I dont have a job! only job i kept was at al's formal wear. I've have my resume professionally done and Im well dressed at interviews. I interviewed at bank of america but my friend was offered the job and he doesn't have a degree, I was in very astounded. Are the recruiters intimidated by someone with a degree?? I'm just curious. I understand that the teachers and counselors dont want to shatter our dreams but why cant they be realistic and dont fabricate anything??
