Should 9/11 be left in the past? (no abusive answers please)?

everyone knows about the september the 11th disaster that happened 9 years ago today, and i know that if i lost somebody in that disaster i would be devastated (i've lost someone close to me so i can sympathise) but should it be publicly remembered every year when it has nearly been a decade? i come from a country that hasnt dealt with terrorism on that scale so i might be a bit mistaken but doesn't doing a memorial out of respect still haunt people?
